The NIH offers funding for graduate students in the beginning stages of their work towards a doctoral degree in biomedical, behavioral, health services, or clinical research areas relating to health fields. This grant is for research and NOT for medical or nursing degrees.
The Indian Health Services Scholarship provides funding for American Indian and Alaskan Native students who are enrolled in programs leading to careers in healthcare. Recipients must intend to work with Native Americans after graduation.
Cornell University hosts a summer program for current juniors/rising senior who are intending to go to medical school. This program, which is geared particularly for minority students, provides students with insight into the basic and clinical sciences of medicine and healthcare via mentoring, lectures, seminars, and a research project.

The M.A. Cartland Shackford Scholarship for medical school is awarded to female graduates of any US university.

The UNCF/Merk scholarship, fellowship, and internship initiative offers funding and support to African-American Students going into the biomedical field.
The Frances Tompkins Nursing Scholarship is given to undergraduate students currently enrolled in nursing programs. This year’s deadline is January 13, 2012.
The AAUW offers several fellowships to women intending to study for an advanced degree at a U.S. institution.
Eligble degree programs are:
- Architecture (M.Arch, M.S.Arch)
- Computer/Information Sciences (M.S.)
- Engineering (M.E., M.S.)
- Mathematics/Statistics (M.S.)
Fellowships in the following fields are restricted to minority women:
- Business Administration (M.B.A.) – applicants may apply for 2nd year of study only
- Law (J.D.) – applicants may apply for 3rd year of study only
- Medicine (M.D., D.O.) – applicants may apply for 3rd or 4th year of study only
